Berbatov’s started playing football with the Pirin Blagoevgrad club and at the age of 17 in 1998/99 season, he joined CSKA Sofia, the club where his father played as a left winger and defender. Berbatov scored 50 goals for CSKA Sofia in all competitions.

In 2001 Berbatov joined the German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. He had a slow start at Leverkusen in the early two season, but in the UEFA champions league 2001-2002 season, he played a vital role and scored a goal against Liverpool in the quarter final, however Bayer Leverkusen lost the final against Real Madrid.
In 2003-2004, Berbatov esablished himself as first choice striker in the Leverkusen side in German Bundesliga season and improved his goal scoring form in UEFA Champions League season.

In 2006, Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Berbatov for a fee of 10m pounds, the most expensive Bulgarian player ever. He scored his first goal for Tottenham in the debut game against Sheffield United at White Hart Lane, North London. Under the guidance of Martin Jol and playing with fellow striker Robbie Keane, he guided Tottenham Hotspur to the UEFA Cup quarter finals.

In the 2006-2007 season, he was won the Tottenham Hotspur player of the season award.

On 29 December 2007, playing against Reading he scored his first premiership hat-trick for Spurs.

In February 2008, Dimitar guided Spurs to their Football League Cup Final victory over Chelsea.

In 2008, after a lot of speculation, Berbatov finally completed the move to Manchester United at a fee of 30.75m pounds, the third most expensive signing in EPL history.
