Manchester United’s chances of retaining the English Premiership title suffered a major blow when they were held to a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers. Paul Robinson made some excellent saves, specially when he denied Valencia. Also there were some important tackles from the young rovers defender Phil Jones to keep the Reds away from goal.

There were many talking points after the match and most of them aimed at Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov. With Rooney out injured it looks like Manchester United cannot climb back to top and they can’t rely on Dimitar Berbatov as alternate striker. Also the english media were suggesting that David Villa might be the next striker which Manchester united are looking to bring at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports after the match: “That’s a fantastic result for them (pointing at Chelsea). They’ve got a home game against Bolton on Tuesday which they will be expected to win.

“It’s slipping away. We needed to win today. We’re now a point behind Chelsea and they’ve got a game in hand that will take it to four points.

“It’s a big gap.

“We’ve got City next week, it’s a derby game, it takes away that issue of winning the league.

“It makes it a different type of game and it’s one we’ll probably look forward to.

“The players committed themselves really well today, they put a great effort in. We were a bit unlucky with Rio Ferdinand’s injury with 10 minutes to go.

“That was down to 10 men really.”
